PH inaugurates 22 MW Tanawon Geothermal Plant

The facility contributes to the country’s 2030 clean energy goal.
The Philippines’ Department of Energy (DOE) has inaugurated the Energy Development Corporation's (EDC) 22-megawatt (MW) Tanawon Geothermal Power Plant in Bac-man Complex, Sorsogon City.
Leading the event was DOE Secretary Sharon Garin, who emphasised that the “project is central to the nation's strategy of balancing economic progress with environmental stewardship.”
“The Tanawon plant contributes to the Philippines' renewable energy targets of 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040. Its recognition as a Certificate of Energy Project of National Significance (CEPNS) highlights the critical role such projects play in ensuring energy security whilst contributing to environmental protection and inclusive growth,” the department said.
Meanwhile, DOE Undersecretary Mylene Capongcol outlined key policy reforms designed to streamline energy development. These include the Green Energy Option Program, which empowers consumers to select renewable energy sources, the Green Energy Auction Programme that facilitates project financing, and the upcoming Geothermal De-risking Facility that aims to unlock the nation’s geothermal potential.
